How does manual call forwarding work?

Published: 07.16.25

What It Is

Manual forwarding means you choose when to forward your calls—on demand. Unlike always-on or scheduled forwarding, you activate it only when needed (e.g., going into court or stepping out for lunch).

How to Use It

  1. Activate Forwarding
    • Dial a specific code followed by your Answering Legal forwarding number (varies by carrier—e.g., *72 for Verizon).
    • Example: Dial *72 + 8001234567, then hit call/send.
  2. Deactivate Forwarding
    • When you're back, dial the deactivation code (e.g., *73 for Verizon).

Best Use Cases

  • You only want calls forwarded during certain times.
  • You prefer to manually control when Answering Legal picks up.

Tip: Save the activation and deactivation codes in your contacts for quick access.

Manual vs. Other Call Forwarding Types

TypeProsCons
ManualFull control, flexible, simple to toggleEasy to forget, not automated, requires user action every time
Always ForwardSet-and-forget, great for solo attorneysMay forward internal/admin calls unnecessarily
Rollover (No Answer)Only forwards if you don’t pick up—ideal for backup coverageDelay in pickup may affect client experience
Time-BasedGreat for firms with fixed business hoursLess flexible, needs to be updated if your schedule changes

Best Practices for Manual Forwarding

  • Save the codes in your phone for easy toggling.
  • Use reminders or calendar alerts to turn forwarding on/off.
  • Communicate with staff so they know when Answering Legal is handling your calls.
